What is digital citizenship?
Put simply, digital citizenship is defined as the norms of appropriate, responsible technology use.
Digital citizenship is comprised of nine essential elements, which are as follows:
1. Digital Access: Full electronic participation in society.
2. Digital Commerce: The electronic buying and selling of goods.
3. Digital Communication: The electronic exchange of information.
4. Digital Literacy: The process of teaching and learning about technology and the use of technology.
5. Digital Etiquette: The electronic standards of conduct or procedure.
6. Digital Law: The electronic responsibility for actions and deeds.
7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities: Those requirements and freedoms extended to everyone in a digital world.
8. Digital Health and Wellness: Physical and psychological well-being in a digital technology world.
9. Digital Security: The electronic precautions to guarantee safety.

Why is digital citizenship important in schools?
As educators, we are tasked with educating the whole student and preparing them for life. By the time our students leave the education system, we hope that they will have the skills necessary to be good citizens. Given the increasing role of digital technology in society, part of being a good citizen is being a good digital citizen. Furthermore, to be successful in the 21st century, students need to know how to use digital technology to connect, collaborate and communicate safely and responsibly. This is why digital citizenship is important in schools.
